Assi Ghat

Assi Ghat is a remarkably vibrant, ancient, and beautiful ghat in Kashi (Varanasi), the city of religion and culture. Situated along the Ganges, it is considered the southernmost ghat in the series along the river’s left bank. If you wish to understand the history, significance, and experiences associated with Assi Ghat in a structured manner, you can learn about them in detail through the steps outlined below—which I am explaining to you step-by-step.

Assi Ghat Most Famous for Boat Ride

The Ganga Aarti held at the famous Assi Ghat in Varanasi (Kashi) is a magnificent confluence of spirituality, culture, and devotion. Although the Aarti takes place both in the morning (“Subah-e-Banaras”) and in the evening, the spectacle of the evening “Sandhya Aarti” is truly divine and mesmerising.

Naming and Mythological History of Assi Ghat.

According to ancient religious beliefs and Puranas (such as the Matsya Purana and Agni Purana), Goddess Durga cast her sword (Asi) here after slaying the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. A stream of water gushed forth from the earth where the sword fell, becoming known as the ‘Assi River.’ The sacred confluence point where this Assi River meets the Ganges was named ‘Assi Ghat.’ Additionally, an ancient Shivling known as ‘Asingameshwar’ is enshrined here beneath a Peepal tree.

Subah-e-Banaras

Mornings at Varanasi’s Assi Ghat are renowned worldwide. At dawn (approximately 4:30 to 5:00 AM), the magnificent ‘Subah-e-Banaras’ event takes place here. This phase begins with the chanting of Vedic mantras and the blowing of conch shells. This is followed by the grand Aarti of Goddess Ganga.

Assi Ghat Subh E Banaras

Immediately after the Ganga Aarti, a session of classical music and bhajans (devotional songs) is held, mesmerising the hundreds of thousands of people present. Finally, a collective yoga session is conducted at the ghat.

The Ganga Aarti performed at the famous Assi Ghat in Varanasi (Kashi) is a magnificent confluence of spirituality, culture, and devotion. Although the Aarti takes place both in the morning (“Subah-e-Banaras”) and in the evening, the evening ceremony is truly divine and mesmerising. Here, the entire process of the grand Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat is explained in detail, step-by-step: The ‘Subah-e-Banaras’ Aarti at Assi Ghat takes place around 5:00 AM, while the evening Aarti is held at 6:30 PM. The Ganga Aarti ceremony lasts for approximately 45 minutes; it is advisable to arrive at the ghat 30 minutes before the Aarti begins.

Assi Ghat Ganga Aarti

The formal commencement of the Ganga Aarti is marked by the blowing of conch shells. All the priests simultaneously sound their conches, producing a powerful and resonant tone. According to the scriptures, this sacred sound purifies the atmosphere, dispels negative energy, and signals the devotees to focus their minds.

Here, you will find views of 10+ famous ghats and the Ganga Aarti. For your convenience, I would like to mention that a shared boat is the most budget-friendly option if you are travelling alone or in a small group; it costs 70 – 80% less than a private boat. For a shared boat, you may have to wait until the boat is full. If you wish to leave sooner, please opt for a separate or private boat. Thanks.
